ARE 5.0 Practice Exams
The Architect Registration Examination (ARE) 5.0, managed by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), is organized into six divisions. These divisions are designed to reflect the current architecture practice, focusing on both project and practice management. The six sections of the ARE 5.0 are:
- Practice Management (PcM): This section focuses on the management of architectural practice, including the ethical, legal, and professional issues that are part of managing an architecture practice or working as a professional in an architectural firm.
- Project Management (PjM): This division covers the management of architectural projects and includes topics such as scheduling, budgeting, and team coordination.
- Programming & Analysis (PA): This section emphasizes the early phases of project development, including assessing client needs, project feasibility, and site conditions to develop a program, budget, and schedule.
- Project Planning & Design (PPD): This division focuses on the preliminary design of buildings and sites, integrating environmental, social, and economic issues into the project design.
- Project Development & Documentation (PDD): This section deals with the integration and detailed development of building systems, construction documents, and project manuals.
- Construction & Evaluation (CE): This final division covers topics related to the construction phase, including bidding, construction administration, and post-occupancy evaluation.
These sections are designed to ensure that candidates possess the knowledge and skills necessary for the effective practice of architecture, particularly in the areas of project coordination, cost, and regulatory compliance, while integrating the necessary design and documentation skills.

The ARE 5.0 Guidelines includes detailed steps for requesting exam accommodations through the online forms.
Rescheduling Fees
NCARB is implementing a new policy for Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) rescheduling fees. Starting August 1, 2023:
· The first time a candidate reschedules a previously scheduled exam appointment, it will be free
· The second reschedule of the same appointment will cost $50
· The third and all subsequent reschedules of the same appointment will cost $100
The ARE 5.0 Guidelines now reflects the updated policy, which is intended to ensure that all candidates have access to exam appointment times.
AIA Resources
The AIA now provides free access to contract documents and other exam-related resources through My NCARB. Other Changes
As previously announced, NCARB has retired both the Approved Test Prep Provider program and the $50 rebate for candidates scheduling an online proctored appointment for the first time. These sections have been removed from the ARE 5.0 Guidelines. The document also now reflects a clarification on the time frame for receiving score reports—all score reports will be delivered within seven days of your exam appointment.
